The Newberry Group, as a part of the Department of State ATA Cyber Training program team, has been involved in conducting training and mentoring programs within the Philippines for the last eight years. The program has trained and mentored the Philippine Law Enforcement community on Cyber Investigations and securing network architectures.

As a part of the larger team, Newberry Group recently assisted in building a state-of-the-art classroom for Philippine law enforcement so that they can teach their own law enforcement personnel cyber-security training. The equipment and software specified for the classroom is currently utilized in the US within training organizations such as the Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy (DCITA) and has been proven effective in training thousands of US-based students. The same approach was taken to build the Philippine Cyber Classroom but with a more mobile approach.
RIght: Newberry Group, member of the ATA Team, with Philippine law enforcement at classroom turnover.

The finished classroom was a huge success. The classroom was 100% functional when the SMEs departed a week later and the in-country trainers received instruction on the new classroom and its functionality. Mike Alcorn, the ATA Cyber Training Program Manager, said, “This was a great example of collaboration and coordination by everyone. The SME/Instructors designed a state of the art classroom that almost any US law enforcement agency would be proud to have.”

Continuous monitoring of mobile devices, regardless of who the owner of the device might be, mitigates current mobile device security gaps such as loss of the device, unsecured wireless connections and direct cyber security attacks. This technology has major implications for cyber security across the spectrum including the healthcare industry’s desire to control patients’ personally identifiable information (PII), the Department of Defense’s concerns about espionage, the risks posed by mobile banking in the financial sector and more. This technology can hinder insiders from exfiltrating sensitive data as well as provide the necessary data protection on devices that may be the victim of theft.
“Our mobile devices are now extensions of ourselves; we take them everywhere. By being able to monitor and potentially disable aspects of that device, organizations can mitigate the risk of private data falling into the wrong hands,” said Phil Justice, Newberry Group Executive Director of Cyber Security. “The organization’s security policy can now be applied to everyone in the coverage area, from employees, visitors, vendors, and partners—both to their work devices to their personal devices.”
“AirPatrol’s mobile intelligence addresses the critical wireless component enterprises need for successful convergence of the physical and cyber security ecosystems,” said Tom Kellermann, CISM, AirPatrol’s Chief Technology Officer. “Further, precise location and context awareness through continuous monitoring of mobile devices empowers the mobile workforce and protects assets.”

About AirPatrol Corporation

The class, “Intelligence Gathering Through Twitter,” was taught at the recent DoD Cyber Crime Conference in Atlanta. The training will now be offered worldwide through cmdLabs, where Baskin is the resident social media security expert. Twitter, currently one of the most popular social networking sites, allows members post micro-blogs, or “tweets,” of 140 characters or less in a publically visible venue – or, with adjusted preferences, to a list of subscribers – or “followers.”

Twitter has evolved into a force of millions of users across the world, sending 65 million tweets per day. It is a popular information source for entertainment fans, allowing fans to follow their favorite entertainers directly, but it is also an increasingly popular way for criminals to share information.

With over 200 million user accounts sending over a billion messages every month on the service to their friends, associates, and partners, the cmdLabs Twitter course is aimed at working through the noise and examining the service from the ground up, explaining its use and purpose, while showing ways to collect information from targeted sources. It is geared towards criminal investigators to teach them the basics behind Twitter and its use. Attendees learn how to track and monitor accounts covertly, as well as how to establish and create safe accounts for use monitoring others.

Eoghan Casey's Digital Evidence & Computer Crime, 3rd Edition now available

After six years of work, the expanded and updated third edition of Digital Evidence and Computer Crime: Forensic Science, Computers and the Internet is now complete.
Newberry Group, which began with contracts to the federal government to staff data centers, expanded from information technology to cyber security in 2005. This element of its business has been growing ever since. The company, based in St. Charles, now investigates breaches, examining hacks with digital forensics and turning evidence over to law enforcement.

McClain's focus has remained consulting with companies to find and repair holes in their networks. She said it was balancing security measures with availability — the ease of access by authorized users — that presents the most difficulty because it introduces a human element to the equation.

The company is ranked on Inc. Magazine’s first-ever Inc. 5,000 list.

Newberry has been ranked among the fastest growing IT companies on the Inc. 500 list every year since 2004. The Inc. 5,000 list, an extension of Inc. magazine’s annual Inc. 500 list, includes businesses from all sectors and catches many businesses that are too big to grow at the pace required to make the Inc. 500. Newberry’s rank this year was 4,533.

“The Newberry Group has been able to grow so substantially over the last three years due to our continued commitment to excellence, our passion for building technology solutions for our clients and, without a doubt, our talented team of professionals,” Chairman and CEO Brenda D. Newberry said. “We’ve developed and provided many high-level technical capabilities as we’ve worked on contracts with government agencies in the past 10 years. Our current strategy for continued growth is to bring those capabilities to the commercial sector while continuing to expand our work for our existing federal clients and additional government agencies.”

The award comes as no surprise to Newberry clients like Kevin Trokey, Chief Operating Officer at St. Louis insurance firm Welsch, Flatness & Lutz, Inc.

“This recognition is certainly well deserved. We had made a huge investment in a custom program for one of our operating units that never worked as designed and hadn’t been properly documented by the firm who wrote it.
The Newberry Group came in evaluated the program, documented the entire system, and quickly had it operating as intended. As valuable as their performance was, the frequent and clear communication they established with our internal IT department was equally valuable,” Trokey said.

The Newberry Group, Inc. ranked 442nd among IT companies on this year’s list. Newberry ranked 88th out of all Missouri companies on the list and 5th out of all Missouri IT companies.
Newberry included in $5 billion federal contract

The Newberry Group, Inc is included in a $5 billion information technology contract with the U.S. General Services Administration.

The contract, known as the Veterans Technology Services Government-Wide Acquisition Contract, is the result of a 2004 executive order from President Bush calling for three percent of all federal contracting to be done with Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses.

As a subcontractor for Vienna, Va.-based Veterans Enterprise Technical Solutions, Inc., Newberry can perform Systems Operations and Maintenance services and Information Systems Engineering services for a variety of federal agencies under the contract. It is an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity five-year contract with one five-year option. More than forty other contractors can provide services under the contract.

“This contract provides another vehicle that allows our customers to reach The Newberry Group” said Diego Maldonado, Senior Vice President of Newberry’s Government Technology Group.

Maldonado said the contract will give Newberry increased access to existing federal clients such as the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Air Force as well as new clients in the federal government. The amount of work, specific tasks and values of any work under this contract have not yet been determined.

Newberry Group CEO featured in new guide book for entrepreneurs

Brenda Newberry, Chairman and CEO of St. Charles-based global IT consultancy The Newberry Group, Inc., is featured in a new book for women entrepreneurs.

Birthing the Elephant: The Woman’s Go-For-It! Guide to Overcoming the Big Challenges of Launching a Business by Karin Abarbanel and Bruce Freeman was published recently by Ten Speed Press. The book includes anecdotes and advice from Newberry, who, in the last 12 years, grew her business from a home-based operation to a consultancy that today serves clients in 15 cities and internationally in Bahrain. Other entrepreneurs featured in the book include Bobbi Brown, founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and Liz Lange, founder and president of Liz Lange Maternity.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this effort to help women entrepreneurs grow their businesses. The book should help them work through those initial hurdles and learn to think big. I was also happy to see a book that addresses issues specific to women, because we still need to battle a lot of perceptions and stereotypes when we start out on our own in business. That’s especially true when the business is not in a field traditionally served by women, which is often the case today,” Newberry said.

The authors chose to include Newberry for several key reasons.

According to Abarbanel and Freeman, “We chose Brenda Newberry because she is an inspiring example of an entrepreneur who built a tremendously successful enterprise by focusing on her customers, her employees - and making service to the community central to her business model.”

Abarbanel runs a marketing communications firm and served as Avon’s spokesperson for its “Corporation to Cottage” initiative. Freeman, nationally known as the Small Business Professor, is a syndicated columnist for Scripps Howard News Service. The move is part of Newberry’s overall strategy for continued growth, aimed at promoting continued quality IT solutions and excellent customer service.

Newberry has grown rapidly and steadily in the nearly 12 years since it was founded by Chairman and CEO Brenda Newberry in 1996, earning a reputation of trust and recognition as one of the fastest-growing companies in the region and the nation in the Deloitte Regional Fast 50, the Deloitte National Technology Fast 500, and the Inc. 500/5,000 list.

“It is my hope that The Newberry Group continues to grow even beyond its previous pace, creating opportunities for more people to become employee-owners and allowing all those involved to contribute in an exponential way to the economic and philanthropic development of this community,” Newberry said.

Founding owners Brenda Newberry and Maurice Newberry, who serves as the company’s President and COO, both retain their positions with the company.

“We wanted to restructure the company in a way that will encourage continued growth and accomplishment while also rewarding the team that has played and will play a vital role in the success of this company,” Brenda Newberry said.

Newberry Security Practice featured in St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Newberry Security Practice’s work to secure the systems of federal agencies was featured in a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article.
