Newberry Group Awarded with USDA RMF Contract

Newberry Group has been selected as a prime contractor to provide Risk Management Framework (RMF) Information Technology Security Assessment and Authorization (SA&A) services to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under a Blanket Purchase Agreement. The contract includes all RMF SA&A services required to ensure all security documentation is accurate and available to support the required Authority to Operate for all USDA systems through their full RMF lifecycle.

The USDA Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Cyber Policy & Oversight (CPO), estimates that the USDA has approximately 700 information systems. Under this contract, Newberry Group will provide the RMF’s critical Steps 1 – 3b and Steps 4-4b to support the USDA OCIO’s efforts to sustain the security posture of the Department’s hundreds of information systems.

Newberry Group, Key Team Member in Philippine Classroom Buildout

The Newberry Group, as a part of the Department of State ATA Cyber Training program team, has been involved in conducting training and mentoring programs within the Philippines for the last eight years. The program has trained and mentored the Philippine Law Enforcement community on Cyber Investigations and securing network architectures.

As a part of the larger team, Newberry Group recently assisted in building a state-of-the-art classroom for Philippine law enforcement so that they can teach their own law enforcement personnel cyber-security training. The equipment and software specified for the classroom is currently utilized in the US within training organizations such as the Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy (DCITA) and has been proven effective in training thousands of US-based students. The same approach was taken to build the Philippine Cyber Classroom but with a more mobile approach.

The finished classroom was a huge success. The classroom was 100% functional when the SMEs departed a week later and the in-country trainers received instruction on the new classroom and its functionality. Mike Alcorn, the ATA Cyber Training Program Manager, said, “This was a great example of collaboration and coordination by everyone. The SME/Instructors designed a state of the art classroom that almost any US law enforcement agency would be proud to have.”

This will complement Newberry’s existing professional services surrounding the Websense® TRITON™ suite of products. Newberry Group, Inc., a nationally-recognized IT services and security firm based in St. Charles, Mo., recently acquired Baltimore-based cmdLabs, LLC, a digital forensics and incident response company with clients in the public and private sectors including the Department of Defense and the State Department.
The new business is expected to augment and enhance The Newberry Group’s existing Cyber Security Practice, which already provides services to federal agencies including the Department of Defense, the USDA, and the Intelligence Community, Christopher J. Steinbach, Chairman and CEO of The Newberry Group, said.

Michael Kobett presents at the DoD Cyber Crime Conference

Kobett presented, Amnesia Live CD - Having No Memory of Your Surfing, a presentation that included a demonstration and discussion of the Live CD distribution which creates an anonymous environment by: using the TOR routing system, on-board a virtual keyboard used to negate the effects of a hardware-based key logger and erasing memory contents on shutdown to negate cold-boot attacks and memory forensic analysis.

Kobett also presented, S.H.R.E.D. Stop Helping Really Evil Doers!, where Kobett demonstrated how easily a large amount of sensitive information related to a wide area network was discovered, simply by researching an IP address found on a piece of discarded paper. Kobett’s examples of the pertinent information discovered included: Individuals’ home, work and cell phone numbers & personal email accounts and for Vendors: ID information, such as customer ID numbers, vendor contact information and phone numbers.

Kobett additionally presented, Virtual Labs Safe Environments for Analysis, Hacking and Learning. Using presentations and demonstrations, Kobett will introduced attendees to Virtualbox and how it can be used for analysis, testing, and educational purposes. Kobett addressed installing operating systems, the benefits of creating and restoring snapshots, benefits of using virtual machines to practice hacking techniques and using virtual machines for malware analysis.

Eoghan Casey presented two advanced topics at the DoD Cyber Crime Conference. A founding partner of cmdLabs, Casey is the author of the foundational book Digital Evidence and Computer Crime, and coauthor of Malware Forensics, and is currently consulting with the DoD Cyber Crime Institute.

Casey presented “Network Traffic Analysis - Sipping from the Firehose”, a presentation that covers tools, techniques and challenges associated with investigating sophisticated network intrusions, with a focus on finding the roots of problems in large quantities of network traffic. Attendees responded positively and left better equipped to identify and analyze malicious network activities while investigating security breaches.

Casey also presented “Smart Phone Forensics” and touched upon an urgent and ever-growing need within the digital forensics industry. The presentation noted that smart phones such as iPhones, Android, Windows Mobile and webOS devices present a substantial opportunity and challenge for forensic practitioners. These devices are essentially computers that people carry in their pockets, and contain substantial amounts of information that can be useful from a forensic perspective, including communications, multimedia, and location information. New acquisition methods have become available that give forensic practitioners access to more information on these devices, including deleted data. Casey’s presentation specifically covers various methods for acquiring and analyzing data on a variety of smart phones, the types of digital evidence that can be recovered from these devices, the tools available to investigators, as well as common hurdles encountered.

cmdLabs Senior Consultant Brian Baskin recently taught investigators from the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Intelligence Community how to utilize social media to collect information from targeted sources. The class, “Intelligence Gathering Through Twitter,” was taught at the recent DoD Cyber Crime Conference in Atlanta. The training will now be offered worldwide through cmdLabs, where Baskin is the resident social media security expert. Employees remain weak link with Internet security

Diane McClain, operations manager of the cyber security division at the Newberry Group, stressed the importance of employee training to ensure that information can be seen by only those who need to see it, protecting it from "the bad guys."

Newberry Group, which began with contracts to the federal government to staff data centers, expanded from information technology to cyber security in 2005. This element of its business has been growing ever since. The company, based in St. Charles, now investigates breaches, examining hacks with digital forensics and turning evidence over to law enforcement.

McClain's focus has remained consulting with companies to find and repair holes in their networks. She said it was balancing security measures with availability — the ease of access by authorized users — that presents the most difficulty because it introduces a human element to the equation.

Newberry included in $5 billion federal contract

The Newberry Group, Inc is included in a $5 billion information technology contract with the U.S. General Services Administration.

The contract, known as the Veterans Technology Services Government-Wide Acquisition Contract, is the result of a 2004 executive order from President Bush calling for three percent of all federal contracting to be done with Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses.

As a subcontractor for Vienna, Va.-based Veterans Enterprise Technical Solutions, Inc., Newberry can perform Systems Operations and Maintenance services and Information Systems Engineering services for a variety of federal agencies under the contract. It is an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity five-year contract with one five-year option. More than forty other contractors can provide services under the contract.

“This contract provides another vehicle that allows our customers to reach The Newberry Group” said Diego Maldonado, Senior Vice President of Newberry’s Government Technology Group.

Maldonado said the contract will give Newberry increased access to existing federal clients such as the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Air Force as well as new clients in the federal government. The amount of work, specific tasks and values of any work under this contract have not yet been determined.

The Newberry Group included in $25.8 billion Navy contract

The U.S. Navy awarded The Newberry Group, Inc., a global IT consultancy, a multiple-award, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract allowing the company to compete for task orders collectively worth up to $25.8 billion a year.

The contract is part of the Navy’s SeaPort Enhanced (SeaPort-e) Rolling Admissions solicitation. The wide-ranging services in SeaPort-e include Information Technology-related services such as Software Engineering, Development, Programming, and Network Support; Reliability, Maintainability, and Availability Support; Quality Assurance Support; and Information System Development, Information Assurance (cyber security), and Information Technology Support.

Under the contract, Newberry can perform services for Naval Sea Systems Command; Naval Air Systems Command; Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command; Naval Supply Systems Command; Military Sealift Command; Naval Facilities Engineering Command; Strategic Systems Programs; the Office of Naval Research; the Defense Threat Reduction Agency; and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Heading up this division is Mr. Steven Cadogan, Newberry’s recently-hired Vice President, Intelligence & Security.

Mr. Cadogan has more than 26 years of professional experience in the Intelligence Community and Public Sector at large, including 14 years at CSC. He most recently served as CSC’s Director of Federal Information Security Solutions, a group with more than 200 client-focused cyber professionals.

Mr. Cadogan will lead and direct the Intelligence and Security Programs Division as a client-facing organization that will deliver Cyber Security solutions to the intelligence and federal community, in line with the Presidential Comprehensive National Cyber Security Initiative. The Newberry Group, Inc. has hired Phillip Justice, Executive Director, Cyber Security Solutions & Services to head Newberry’s respected Cyber Security Practice. Mr. Justice has had 21 years of information technology and security experience gained in highly secure and regulated environments in the federal and intelligence community.

The Cyber Security Practice’s goal is to ensure our employees have a myriad of experiences; solid aptitude and education; knowledge of methodologies; and tools available to them across the company. Newberry opens Maryland location

Newberry on winning team to provide Cyber Investigations Training for DCITA

The Newberry Group was selected as a subcontractor to CSC (NYSE: CSC) as part of a team to provide cyber training in support of the Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy (DCITA) in Linthicum, Maryland as well as the General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM). Newberry will assist in the design, development, and delivery of cyber-security, law enforcement, counterintelligence, cyber forensics, and incident response courses.

CSC won this task order, which was competitively procured by GSA’s FEDSIM under the GSA’s Millennia Government-wide Acquisition Contract (GWAC), in September 2009. It has a one-year base period with four one-year options. The total estimated value is $85 million.

Newberry cyber training director teaches anti-terrorism course to Philippines law enforcement

Joseph Church, Director of Cyber Training at The Newberry Group, Inc., recently taught an anti-cyber terrorism course to officers in the Philippines National Police at the Philippine Public Safety College in Taguig City, Philippines. Mr. Church, who serves as a computer forensics expert instructor and subject matter expert for the U.S. Department of State, led the cyber forensics team that taught the course.

The Newberry Group acquires Baltimore digital forensics firm cmdLabs

The Newberry Group, Inc., a nationally-recognized IT services and security firm based in St. Charles, Mo., recently acquired Baltimore-based cmdLabs, LLC, a digital forensics and incident response company with clients in the public and private sectors including the Department of Defense and the State Department.

The new business is expected to augment and enhance The Newberry Group’s existing Cyber Security Practice, which already provides services to federal agencies including the Department of Defense, the USDA, and the Intelligence Community, Christopher J. Steinbach, Chairman and CEO of The Newberry Group, said.
