Newberry Group Achieves Barracuda Authorized Training Center Status

Columbia, MD (May 29, 2013) - Newberry Group, an employee-owned IT firm and diamond-level Barracuda Networks partner, has achieved Barracuda’s prestigious Authorized Training Center status. Barracuda applauds Newberry for reaching ATC status by passing the BTN300 and BTN350: NG Firewall Certified Security Engineer Training courses. This extensive 10-day training provides insight into the conception of modern firewall architecture and realization with the help of Barracuda NG Firewall products. These courses include installing, configuring, and operating a Barracuda NG Firewall system as well as providing participants with practical examples and problem-solving strategies for enterprise networks.

Newberry Group, Key Team Member in Philippine Classroom Buildout

The Newberry Group, as a part of the Department of State ATA Cyber Training program team, has been involved in conducting training and mentoring programs within the Philippines for the last eight years. The program has trained and mentored the Philippine Law Enforcement community on Cyber Investigations and securing network architectures.

As a part of the larger team, Newberry Group recently assisted in building a state-of-the-art classroom for Philippine law enforcement so that they can teach their own law enforcement personnel cyber-security training. The equipment and software specified for the classroom is currently utilized in the US within training organizations such as the Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy (DCITA) and has been proven effective in training thousands of US-based students. The same approach was taken to build the Philippine Cyber Classroom but with a more mobile approach.

The finished classroom was a huge success. The classroom was 100% functional when the SMEs departed a week later and the in-country trainers received instruction on the new classroom and its functionality. Mike Alcorn, the ATA Cyber Training Program Manager, said, “This was a great example of collaboration and coordination by everyone. The SME/Instructors designed a state of the art classroom that almost any US law enforcement agency would be proud to have.”

Newberry Group Launches their Websense Authorized Training Center

Newberry Group is pleased to announce the establishment of the Websense Federal Authorized Training Center. This will complement Newberry’s existing professional services surrounding the Websense® TRITON™ suite of products. The Websense® TRITON™ solution is the fastest growing solution for companies looking to avoid data theft and stay out of the deadlines, and demand for training is growing proportionally.
Newberry will host its first Websense class in the National Capital region this autumn. The class will cover the Websense Web Security Gateway Anywhere solution. Students will learn how to configure advanced features, perform basic troubleshooting, and deploy and manage the TruHybrid™ (a combined on-premises and cloud deployment) component through the use of lecture instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on lab practice exercises. Additional classes will be offered in the near future on Websense web, data and email security solutions.

This training competency adds to the existing professional services Newberry offers for Websense products and their customers. This includes consulting engagements staffed by Websense certified engineers, who assess, plan, design and optimize Websense web, data and email security solutions for any business or government environment. cmdLabs Teaches Digital Forensics at the 2011 DOD Cyber Crime Conference

cmdLabs, a subsidiary of the Newberry Group, have once again provided quality, structured classroom instruction at the DoD Cyber Crime Conference, held this year in Atlanta, GA.

Christopher Daywalt, a founding partner of cmdLabs and consultant to the Defense Cyber Forensics Laboratory, has provided quality instruction in the area of malicious carrier files at the Defense Cyber Crime Conference. The class covered the fundamentals of analyzing malicious carrier files such as PDFs, Microsoft Office documents and CHM files used in spear phishing attacks.

Michael Kobett, an employee at cmdLabs and an instructor at the DoD Cyber Investigations Training Academy, taught an information assurance class on Penetration Testing. This class introduced open source pen testing tools and methods to students in a hands-on environment.

cmdLabs teaches investigators to harness Twitter

cmdLabs Senior Consultant Brian Baskin recently taught investigators from the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Intelligence Community how to utilize social media to collect information from targeted sources. The class, “Intelligence Gathering Through Twitter,” was taught at the recent DoD Cyber Crime Conference in Atlanta. The training will now be offered worldwide through cmdLabs, where Baskin is the resident social media security expert. Twitter, currently one of the most popular social networking sites, allows members post micro-blogs, or “tweets,” of 140 characters or less in a publically visible venue – or, with adjusted preferences, to a list of subscribers – or “followers.”

Twitter has evolved into a force of millions of users across the world, sending 65 million tweets per day. It is a popular information source for entertainment fans, allowing fans to follow their favorite entertainers directly, but it is also an increasingly popular way for criminals to share information.

With over 200 million user accounts sending over a billion messages every month on the service to their friends, associates, and partners, the cmdLabs Twitter course is aimed at working through the noise and examining the service from the ground up, explaining its use and purpose, while showing ways to collect information from targeted sources. It is geared towards criminal investigators to teach them the basics behind Twitter and its use. Attendees learn how to track and monitor accounts covertly, as well as how to establish and create safe accounts for use monitoring others.

cmdLabs has offered a plethora of training and speaking engagements over the summer months and has plans to continue for the rest of the year.

Eoghan Casey presented Investigating Compromised Smart Phones: Forensic Analysis and Live Response at the Mobile Forensics Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC on June 7th. Eoghan also delivered Computer Forensics Workshop in Rome, Italy from June 13-15 and Network Forensics Workshop in Rome, Italy from June 16-17.

Terrance Maguire presented Expert Briefing: Investigating Compromised Smart Phones: Forensic Analysis and Live Response at the SANS DFIR Summit in Austin, TX on June 7.

cmdLabs delivered the SANS Mobile Device Forensics course at SANSFIRE 2011 in Washington, DC (http://www.sans.org/sansfire-2011/) from July 17-21.
